4C - What Recovery Has Taught Me About Prevention - Alex Elswick, PhD

As a person living in long-term recovery from a substance use disorder (and a few anxiety disorders, as well), I've learned a great deal both personally and professionally about drug use prevention.  In many ways, my own experience is a microcosm of the failure of US prevention efforts.  Despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, much of the prevention apparatus in the US is predicated on outdated science and lame scare tactics.  But what does meaningful drug use prevention look like?  Let's look at the evidence!

This workshop will provide coordinators with easy to implement strategies to promote self-care and mindfulness into their own live but provide strategies that they can share with the families and children they work with.  Mindfulness is a word that sometimes gets over-used and definitely sometimes seems more complicated than it is.  Strategies will include ideas for family mindfulness and connection activities and mindfulness practices to share with students.  Participants can expect to engage in the presentation by trying out some new strategies and walking away with strategies right away!

How many times have you heard that when dealing with students who act differently than their peers and sometimes are seen as a problem in school?  More times than you can probably count. All of us are different.  Learn how to work with families, staff and students to appreciate the differences we all bring and build lasting relationships at the same time.  Angry, Disruptive, ADHD, Neurodiverse, Needy and Nerdy children need space too.

For many of us right now, life still feels turned upside down, and prioritizing taking care of ourselves falls further down on our to-do list. However, we can choose to make becoming strong, healthy, and resilient a higher priority. LivingWell Regional Well-being Coordinators, Hadley Shoultz and Vicky Stevens, will share information on ways to practice self-care and set boundaries to improve health and reduce the risk of burnout.

Alina, Conner, Caden and Carlie are excited to show you ways to combat the issues teens are facing today. 5A - Court Appointed Special Advocates - Rebecca Palmer, The Buffalo Trace CASA Program, Inc.

CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) provides trained community volunteers to speak for children in court who are victims of dependency, neglect and/or abuse.  When a child enters the foster care system because his or her home is no longer safe, a District or Family Court Judge may appoint a committed volunteer to help.  CASA volunteers are screened, highly trained to represent and advocate for a child’s best interests in the child protection system.  CASA Volunteers are often the most consistent person in the child’s life.   

5B - The Prevention Enhancement System: Advancing Critical Substance Use and Suicide Prevention Efforts in Kentucky - Camille Croweak, Kentucky Division of Behavioral Health, Tiffany Quarles- Kentucky DBH, Program Administrator, Samantha Whelan- Communicare Regional Prevention Center, Stimulant Prevention

This session will introduce the Prevention Enhancement System and the function it serves in creating safe and healthy schools and communities. This session will examine current trends in youth substance use and mental health through Kentucky Incentives for Prevention data. It will also provide evidence-based strategies to address the risk and protective factors most impacting young people’s health and well-being. At the conclusion, attendees will understand their role in preventing youth substance use and available supportive connections in the community.

5C - “Are They Good for Your Kids?" Child Sexual Abuse Prevention - Janna Estep Jordan, Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky, Sara Early Jenkins, Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky, Programs and Trainings Coordinator

Child sexual abuse is preventable when adults educate themselves and take precautions to keep children safe. This workshop highlights Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky’s "Are They Good for Your Kids?" Campaign and resources and teaches participants how to prevent child sexual abuse in their spheres of influence. The workshop will cover grooming behaviors, healthy child sexual development, and will provide school personnel actionable steps to take to keep kids safe.

5D - Equity Dashboard - Florence Chang, Kentucky Department of Education, Strategic Analyst of Learning

Kentucky's Equity Dashboard will help participants better understand student groups that may be at-risk of over or underrepresentation in categories/programs in their school or district. Exercises will include a problem-solving analysis protocol to help make team-based decisions regarding students and equitable access and outcomes. In addition, root causes as to why students may be at-risk of over or underrepresentation in categories/programs will be discussed, as well as resources to help find evidence-based strategies to help school teams positively impact student groups.

5E - The 8 Be's of Communicating & Connecting - Jeremy Taylor; Taylor Leadership Development

You don't have to have the "gift of gab" or have "a way with words" in order to be an effective presenter. Anyone can become a better communicator. If you are someone who holds a work position that requires you to present information, these simple tips can help you grow and get better. This workshop will equip, empower, and encourage attendees to apply basic principles of public speaking in order to communicate effectively with various audiences.

5F - Don't Stop Believin': Building Resilience and Overcoming Obstacles - Lisa King

This session will provide inspiration as well as some practical ideas as we explore ways to foster the skill of resilience in students, staff members (ourselves included), and our families. We will also explore some of the obstacles and pitfalls that sometimes fall in our way, and how to navigate the best way forward despite adversity. Ideas to implement ways to encourage resilience in your community will be shared.

7P - The New Normal: Normalizing the Mental Health Discussion - Scott Harvey

Coming out of the pandemic we are seeing huge increases in mental health needs. And, yet, it's still a topic that our society isn't ready to discuss, so people continue to suffer in silence while they assume the rest of the world has it more together than they do. Scott Harvey believes we can not heal anything that we can't discuss. This hard-hitting presentation will show you how important open conversations are for beginning the healing process.

8A - Poverty and Neglect: Understanding the Difference and Supporting Families and Children Living in Poverty - Sara Early Jenkins, Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky, Janna Estep Jordan, Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky, Director of Operations and Prevention Education

Location: Clements

During the 2022 Legislative Session, the General Assembly changed the definition of Neglect in Kentucky Revised Statute to better reflect the difference between poverty and child neglect. This workshop not only explores the difference between poverty and neglect but helps service providers understand primary prevention or ways to support families prior to CPS involvement. Attendees will also learn ways to communicate messaging to their colleagues and community members that encourage supporting families and preventing maltreatment from ever occurring.

8B - LGBTQ+ Basics and Beyond - Tristan Vaught

This workshop is designed to create more equitable and inclusive environments through a workshop filled with a variety of topics and exercises. This training is geared to provide the skills to respectfully engage with members of the LGBTQ+ community and sustain relationships. We explore topics relevant in the field, predominantly in US culture surrounding sexual/romantic orientation and gender identity. Some training topics include: LGBTQ+ history, the history of medicalized language, the effects of pathologizing bodies and behaviors, current laws and protections, the importance of language and the evolution of inclusive language. This is an interactive workshop with varied pedagogy. We will give real life examples of interactions between professionals and the community.

8C - High Impact Communication: Hacks From a Hostage Negotiator - Scott Harvey

We live in a world where most people are so afraid of saying the WRONG thing that they end up saying NOTHING. What does that silence communicate to a listening world? In this presentation, Scott Harvey takes what he learned over 20 years as a hostage negotiator and public information officer to show the potential dangers of silence while teaching participants ways to communicate their way through any situation.

8D - Creating Afterschool Partnerships to Support Student Learning - Tom Haggard, Kentucky Out of School Alliance, Stephanie Barker, Kentucky Out-of-School Alliance, Coordinator

Kentucky has a strong network of expanded learning providers. These include before school, afterschool, summer enrichment, and other out-of-school time learning programs that collaborate with libraries, museums, colleges, faith based centers, and local recreation and parks sites. We have the relationships and expertise to help schools build robust community partnerships that accelerate students’ academic and social-emotional learning. This session will allow FRYSC Coordinators to explore these potential partnerships and learn how to implement best practices in their community.

Burnout is real, and sadly it's also very common, especially for leaders and those working in ""helping professions"". This conversation is designed to empower you to focus on what you can control to combat burnout so you can continue going and growing.

8F- Being Peacemakers in a Culture of Outrage - Lisa King

Location: Carroll Ford

In a culture where outrage has become commonplace, how can we help our kids and communities see the pitfalls that this creates? While it’s apparent that being constantly outraged and divisive takes a toll on people psychologically and physically, it seems as if some people are addicted to the feeling of being outraged. Come hear ideas of how to create a way to teach listening with less judgement and being a role-model in the ever-changing landscape of social media and the opinions of all around us.
